We’re planning to launch our next crowdfunding campaign at our Autumn Gathering on 12th November 2016.
Between now and then, we would like our supporters to vote on what The Ferret should investigate with any money raised.
We hope to raise enough money to fund an in-depth investigation into the topic that you choose - and if we raise more than our stated target then The Ferret can do even more.
Here’s the shortlist:
1 - Diversity in public life
Nicola Sturgeon has pushed gender balance on public boards to the top of the political agenda. But how easy will this be to achieve achieve when even Holyrood is struggling to ensure female and ethnic minority representation? And is public life more widely, from the boardroom to the newsroom, representative of modern Scotland?
2 - Work and social security
As growing numbers of people experience worse pay and conditions the Scottish Government is taking on greater responsibility for delivering social security. Which Scottish employers are getting away with poor practice? Who is suffering the most due to austerity? How does big business lobby government and do large firms have undue influence at the expense of workers’ rights?
3 - Homelessness and housing
The housing crisis continues unabated as private rents rocket while buying a house is a pipe dream for much of the younger generation. Which private landlords are exploiting this situation and will policies adopted by the government really boost affordable housing? What effect is austerity having on public services designed to keep people off the streets and is our planning system equipped to tackle this challenge?
4 - Health and social care
We’re all living longer but are our health and care services struggling to cope? How are austerity measures affecting the most vulnerable in Scottish society - those who may struggle to speak up for themselves or be listened to? Scotland’s NHS spends a great deal of public money. Is all of it spent wisely? What is the NHS doing with our data and how much privatisation is taking place?
Vote now in the online poll, and tell is which of these areas are your priority for us to dig into next.
