Join The Ferret and NUJ Scotland for a masterclass from Mark Coughlan in video journalism.
When: Wed 14 December 2016, 14:00 – 17:00 GMT
Where: NUJ Scotland, 114 Union Street, Glasgow, G1 3QQ
Mark Coughlan is an investigations and current affairs reporter with RTÉ, the Irish national public service broadcaster. Before joining RTE he co-founded TheStory.ie, a blog focused on obtaining and publishing government data and documents. TheStory.ie has since developed into an arm of Ireland's main information rights not-for-profit.
He started with RTE as a freelance researcher, becoming a reporter for Prime Time in 2012. Prime Time is the most-watched, and most influential, current affairs programme in Ireland. His investigations have been raised at Leaders’ Questions in the Irish parliament and caused Government departments and State bodies to launch internal inquiries.
Audits stemming from his broadcasts have resulted in Government bodies changing their spending oversight policies, and caused them to review their relationship with private individuals.
Mark has also shot a full-length documentary for RTE, is comfortable shooting with a variety of cameras, regularly directs and shoots long-form documentary-style packages for Prime Time, and edits his own footage. He has also worked undercover and helped develop workflows for small and hidden cameras.
He'll be speaking about the key ingredients and stepping stones involved in long form TV journalism; the basics of TV investigations; researching, scripting and structuring stories for video; the technical aspects of shooting and making long-form video journalism; and the potential for doing video stories on a minimal budget.
After the event, participants are welcome to join us for The Ferret Christmas Drinks (location tbc).
There's only 10 tickets available for this event, and as ever, Ferret members get 25% off. Book now on Eventbrite.
