If you’re new to this site then you might be wondering how it all works. Here’s some practical tips.
The Ferret is a community of people from over the place, and we felt we needed our own social network dedicated to our work, that can help everyone communicate and share ideas. We didn’t think it was a good idea to rely on Facebook for this.
Also, we use this site to manage the comments on our “main” websites, as this site allows us to tackle spam and abusive comments more effectively.
The site is split into different categories. Some of these categories are public access, and some are limited to smaller groups of people.
Everyone who subscribes to The Ferret is given access to the Subscriber category. There are also categories for Volunteers, Authors, and Directors. We sometimes also set-up sub-categories for people to collaborate on projects.
You can see all the extra Categories you have access to, when you login. If you think you should have access to a particular category, but don’t, get in touch with @allytibbitt
Your profile and preferences
If you look in the top left corner of the screen when you are logged in, you should see an icon that represents your profile. If you click on it, you’ll get a drop down menu. At the top-right of that menu, is a small cog. Click that cog to bring up a page where you can edit your profile for the site.
It’s helpful if you can fill out your profile details with as much information as you are comfortable sharing with the world.
You can also manage how often the site sends you emails what you get notified about, and various other options.
The site supports “@mentions” like Facebook or Twitter. So you can @mention another user in a post, but you can also @mention a whole group of people. So to send a notification you could include @[Directors] in your post and they’ll all get a notification.
It also does emojis
Adding photos and sharing files
To add a photo to your post, just drag and drop it into the post where you want it to appear.
Alternatively use the Upload Button to add it. If you want to share other kinds of files, you can either upload them to the post, or use Google Drive.
If you add a “sharing link” from Google Drive to a post, it should embed in the post nicely.
Who else is a member?
There’s a directory of users here: https://community.theferret.scot/users
Yes, the more you use the forum, the more badges you’ll get. It’s really quite exciting.
About the Stories category
Virtually all of the posts in the Stories category are linked to stories on our main news websites. So if you comment on those posts, there’s a good chance that your thoughts will also be displayed beneath the story on the other website too.
