Has the SNP overseen the biggest in-work poverty increase since devolution?

Ferret Fact Service looks at Jeremy Corbyn’s claim that the SNP has overseen the biggest increase of-work poverty.

Firstly, the Scottish Parliament was not first convened in 1999, it was re-convened.

Secondly, the idea that the Scottish Government/Executive, of whichever colour or hue, is somehow responsible for a rise or fall of in-work poverty is ridiculous.

A rudimentary understanding of how Scotland is financed via the block grant together with which powers are reserved to Westminster would have shown that writing an article about such a statement is entirely pointless as the Scottish Parliament control neither.

A better written and researched article would have compared the in-work poverty levels between the different constituent nations of the UK to identify which nation was tackling this issue best rather than give credence to Corbyn’s ridiculous claim.

More “Lies, damned lies and statistics”…

Had the SNP been in control of all powers then this may well have been factually correct. However they, nor any other combination of parties, have had total control of Scotland’s governing since the parliament was re-convened.

Twould have been nice if this had appeared, even as a foot-note, in this article…

Yep, as argued elsewhere there’s a case to be made for less simplified conclusions and better highlighting of context. Will be interesting to see how the fact check service evolves.
